LaTeXila is an open source and freely distributed software project that acts as a standalone and feature-complete LaTeX editor designed especially for the GNOME desktop environment, running on any GNU/Linux operating system.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for multiple languages, customizable buttons to convert, view and compile documents with a single mouse click, a document structure displayed as a list of chapters, figures and sections, which are easily navigable. It features a modern graphical user interface written in GTK+ that is clean, easy-to-use and straightforward.

Moreover, the application features symbol tables, which include arrows and Greek letters, completion of LaTeX commands, templates, easy projects management, spell checking, forward and backward search, integrated file browser, as well as various toolbars and menus that include the main LaTeX commands.

The user will be able to open as many instances as he or she want, in order to work on multiple projects at the same time. It uses Latexmk by default, as well as the BibTeX, pdfTeX and dvipdf projects. In addition, it is possible to convert LaTeX documents to various other file formats, including PDF, DVI and PostScript.

Under the hood and availability

A quick look under the hood will show us that the LaTeXila application is written entirely in the Vala and C programming languages, using the cross-platform GTK+ GUI toolkit for its beautiful graphical user interface.

On the downloads section above you can find a universal source archive that can be virtually installed on any Linux kernel-based operating system, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.

For faster installations, use the “latexila” binary package provided via the Software Center app of your Linux distribution. Officially supported OSes include Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo and openSUSE. It has also been tested on the OpenBSD operating system.
