AWStats

AWStats is an open source, featureful, freely distributed, easy-to-use, platform-independent and powerful web-based log file analyzer application implemented in Perl. It has been designed for people who want to analyze the log files of their web, mail or FTP servers.

The application displays detailed statistics about unique visitors, visited web pages, total visits, web page hits, rush hours, operating systems used, search engines, web browsers used, website keywords, broken links, robots visits, etc.

Features at a glance

Key features include an Apache log file analyzer, a mail log file analyzer, a FTP log file analyzer, HTML dynamic or static reporting, support for unlimited log file size, the ability to process splitted log files for clusters, as well as the ability to be extend its functionality through plugins.

It is capable of analyzing a wide variety of log file formats, including Apache NCSA log files, supporting both CLF and ELF/XLF formats, Microsoft IIS log files in the W3C format, WebStar log files, as well as log files from proxy, streaming, web and wap servers.

In addition, the application supports log files that haven’t been correctly sorted, supports reverse DNS lookup, supports DNS cache files, supports WhoIS links, supports dynamic reports as CGI (Common Gateway Interface) output, include a Webmin module, and supports multiple languages.

Thanks to its powerful plugin architecture, users will be able to easily extend the application’s default functionality. There are a wide range of plugins included, such as plugins for detecting countries and cities based on an IP address.

Among other interesting features, we can mention support for multi-named websites, protection against cross-site scripting attacks, experimental PDF export, support for generating static reports in XHTML or HTML pages, support for storing the analysis database in XML format.

AWStats has been awarded by Softoware with the “Editor’s Pick” award. It was also awarded by SourceForge with the “Program of the Month” award in June 2004. We’ve also give it a five star rating!
