From the creator of Musique, we’re welcome you to Minitube, a beautifully crafted application that has been designed from from the ground up to act as a native YouTube player for GNU/Linux platforms.

Supports High-Definition video clips

Among its highlights, we can easily mention support for HD (High-Definition) video clips that are magically grabbed from the official servers of the highly acclaimed YouTube website. It supports playback of both 1080p and 720p video streams.

You can play YouTube videos in full-screen

In addition, the application allows the user can subscribe to certain channels and receive instant notifications for new videos. The YouTube streams can be played in full-screen and there’s no need to log into your YouTube account or create a new one in order to play video clips.

It doesn't require Adobe Flash Player

Another interesting feature of Minitube is that is won’t require you to install the Adobe Flash Player plugin, especially that it’s no longer supported on GNU/Linux systems.

It’s low on resources and written in Qt

The application’s graphical user interface (GUI) has been written in the universal and cross-platform Qt GUI toolkit and requires very little hardware support to obtain good performance.

Supports Ubuntu and other OSes

Minitube is a multi-platform application that supports Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. On GNU/Linux, you can download binary packages for Ubuntu, but it’s also available for download as sources for any other Linux distribution.

The best, native YouTube player for Linux

All things considered, Minitube is a great application for watching YouTube videos from the comfort of your Linux desktop, without having to open a web browser and log into a Google account.

Despite the fact that it’s written in Qt, it supports a wide range of open source desktop environments, including the popular GNOME, KDE, LXDE, Xfce and Unity. It is a native YouTube client and it will not emulate the YouTube website!

What is new in this release:

  • This release is about porting Minitube to the new YouTube APIs, version 3. The old ones are going to be switched off in a few weeks so everybody make sure to update.
  • Minitube is now using HTTPS everywhere for better privacy and security. Also, Minitube now loads 50 results instead of 10 so finding the right video now requires even less clicking.
  • The Windows and Mac version ship with LibVLC 2.2.0. This should solve playback issues reported by a few Windows users. On Ubuntu, the "Ambiance" style toolbar is now back.
