Kdenlive

Kdenlive is an open source application that provides users with a non-linear, intuitive, modern and very powerful multi-track video editor. It uses the latest video technologies and runs well under the KDE desktop environment.

Features at a glance

Key features include editing of AVCHD, HDV and DV video formats, ability to mix video, audio and image files, support for a plethora of digital cameras and camcorders, Frei0r effects, custom profiles, and support for layers.

It allows users to do basic video editing tasks, such as to create, crop, move, delete video, audio, image and text clips. Files can be easily exported to non-destructive video formats, high quality H.264 format, as well as the DV and MPEG-2 formats.

When running the application for the first time, users will have to go through a first time setup process that allows theme to view the installed modules, as well as to choose which codecs will be available when working with video files.

Supported video file formats

Supported video file formats include H.263, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, WMV, XviD, x264, Theora, DV, FLV, and many others. In addition, Kdenlive supports the AAC, AC3, ALAC, EAC, FLAC, MP2, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, WMA, PCM, ADPCM, GSM, MP3, Opus and Speex audio file formats.

Among the built-in modules, we can mention MLT and Melt for supporting the MLT (Media Lovin' Toolkit) video backend and rendering MLT packages, FFmpeg for supporting several video formats, libdv for working with DV files, QImage for working with image files, and Title module for working with titles.

Numerous video standards are supported by the application, including HD 1080p/i and 720p, HDV, NTSC, QCIF, QVGA, SVCD, VCD PAL/NTSC, DV/DVD, CVD, CIF, as well as the standard 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.

What is new in version 16.12:

• Projects:
• Allow custom cache folder. You can now define a custom folder per project to store temporary files. This can be useful if you want to store temporary files on another drive, and also if you want to easily move your project's temporary files to another computer
• Portable projects: to allow moving a project to another computer / drive, we now use relative paths for clips that are inside the project's directory. So if your source clips are in the same folder as your kdenlive project file (or in subfolders), you can simply move/copy the directory and the project should open without any change.
• Library:
• When you (re) use the same image sequence clip, title clip, or even color clip multiple times in the same libary clip, such image sequences and titles will only be added once to your project bin. (See also our Toolbox post on Library Clips with Image Sequences, Titles, and Color Clips.)
• The way Kdenlive expands library clips containing multiple tracks should be more intuitively now: place the library clip on the topmost track, it will be expanded down from there if multiple tracks are required. If there aren't enough tracks below, yet enough tracks when taking also above tracks into account, then Kdenlive will make use of the above tracks too. Kdenlive now correctly expands clips immediately below a transition, instead of reporting an error. Error reporting has been improved in general for expanding library clips. • For this release, we did put a lot of energy into bug fixing and stability (more than 140 issues solved) to bring you a better editing experience. We have solved a lot of project corruption issues, and the introduction of the automatic backup feature means you should hopefully enjoy Kdenlive better than ever!
• Among the features improvements, the proxy clips (clips replacing the original ones when editing a format that is too slow to edit, for example AVCHD) should work fine now, HDMI capture should also be improved (feedback welcome) and some GUI multi threading should make operations a bit smoother.
• As usual, we also benefit from the latest improvements in MLT, a new version (0.7.6) was released today that improves stability and fixes important issues for users of non english locale.
