DeVeDe is an open source piece of software that allows anyone to easily and quickly create DVD-Video, VideoCD (VCD), Super VideoCD (sVCD) and China VideoDisc (CVD) discs, as well as DivX/MPEG-4 video files that are suitable for home DVD players.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for both PAL and NTSC video systems, optimization for dual core CPUs, support for creating DVD-Video menus, support for subtitles, audio shifting, as well as basic video editing functionality, such as rotating, deinterlacing, etc.

Another interesting feature is the ability to use any number of video files for the creation of aforementioned projects, in any of the formats supported by the powerful and widely used MPlayer application.

Easy-to-use graphical user interface

Its graphical user interface is unique, easy-to-use and straightforward, allowing users to choose from one of the supported disc types from the get-go. The Video DVD mode will create DVD-Video discs suitable for all DVD home players, the VideoCD mode will create VCDs with a picture quality equivalent to VHS tapes, and the Super VideoCD mode will create sVCDs with better picture quality than VCDs.

In addition, the China VideoDisc mode will create another kind of Super VideoCD discs, mainly targeted at the Chinese market, and the DivX/MPEG-4 mode will create video files that are compliant with DivX home players.

Availability and under the hood

The program is written in the Python programming language and requires the MPlayer, Mencoder, FFmpeg, MKisofs, VCDImager, DVDAuthor, PyGTK and PyGlade software packages. It is distributed as a DEB file for Ubuntu and Debian GNU/Linux based OSes, as well as a universal source archive that can be configured, compiled and installed on any Linux distribution.

Bottom line

Summing up, DeVeDe is one of the best applications for creating DVD-Video, VCD, sVCD and CVD discs, as well as DivX videos with minimum effort. Too bad that these video formats are no longer used these days.
