It can be used for acceptance level testing and acceptance test-driven development (ATDD).

It has an easy-to-use tabular syntax for creating test cases and its testing capabilities can be extended by test libraries implemented either with Python or Java.

Users can also create new keywords from existing ones using the same simple syntax that is used for creating test cases.

Features:

  • Enables easy-to-use tabular syntax for creating test cases in a uniform way.
  • Allows using keyword-driven, data-driven and behavior-driven (BDD) approaches.
  • Provides ability to create reusable higher-level keywords from the existing keywords.
  • Provides easy-to-read reports and logs in HTML format.
  • Is platform and application independent.
  • The modular architecture supports creating tests even for applications with several diverse interfaces.
  • Provides a simple library API for creating customized test libraries.
  • Provides a command line interface and XML based outputs for integration into existing build infrastructure (continuous integration systems).
  • Provides support for Selenium for web testing, Java GUI testing, running processes, Telnet, SSH, and so on.
  • Remote library interface enables distributed testing and implementing test libraries in any programming language.
  • Provides tagging to categorize and select test cases to be executed.
  • Has built-in support for variables, practical particularly for testing in different environments.

What is new in this release:

  • Faster log/report generation.
  • Enhanced color support on console.
  • Easier disabling of setup, teardown, template, timeout and tags.

What is new in version 2.6.1:

  • This is a micro release that fixes library documentation generation tool and does not affect normal Robot Framework use. Windows installers for example are not updated.

What is new in version 2.5.3:

  • Robot Framework 2.5.3 was mainly created to fix a critical bug in the new JAR distribution on Windows.

What is new in version 2.5.2:

  • Robot Framework 2.5.2 fixes two encoding related bugs that could crash execution in certain environments and slightly enhances compatibility with RF 2.1.x versions.

What is new in version 2.5.1:

  • Files without extension inside test data directories crash execution
  • Variables are not resolved from arguments to Java libraries
  • Splitting outputs - log, report, summary headings say "None Test Report"
  • Timeouts, fatal errors, and syntax errors should stop execution of templated tests immediately
  • Already imported libraries are instantiated again
  • All keywords are not executed in dry-run mode if there are failures
  • Comment values should be stripped and should not have pipes between cells
  • Run Keywords keyword reports continuable failures incorrectly

What is new in version 2.1.2:

  • Possibility to implement BDD style keywords without Given/When/Then/And prefix
  • Enhanced libdoc.py to enable uploading documentation to RFDoc
  • Command line arguments turned into lower case when using '--option=Value' format instead of '--option Value'
