From the creators of the powerful Proxmox Virtual Environment operating system, we introduce the Proxmox Mail Gateway project, a Linux kernel-based distribution derived from the highly acclaimed Debian GNU/Linux OS and designed to protect your computers from email spam and viruses.

Features at a glance

Key features of Proxmox Mail Gateway include advanced spam detection, daily reports, attachment blocking, virus removal, blocking of phishing emails, support for standard computer/server hardware, as well as advanced statistics.

In addition, the operating system offers support for SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) and SCSI RAID, includes an object-oriented rule system, provides automatic update of virus signature database, secure web based configuration, and automatic installation within minutes.

Distributed as a 32-bit, installable ISO image

The Proxmox Mail Gateway project is distributed as a bootable, installable-only ISO image that contains software packages optimized only for 32-bit (i386) computer platforms. Users can write the ISO image to either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of their PC.

At the boot prompt, wait a few seconds for the installer to appear or simply press the Enter key on your keyboard. The Linux kernel and all other components will load, allowing you to install the distribution on your personal computer.

Installing Proxmox Mail Gateway

To begin installing Proxmox Mail Gateway, you should first accept the license agreement, select the target device for the installation (must be an empty disk) and configure the network. The rest of the installation process is automatic, so you won’t have to partition your disk drive or do any other administrative tasks. When the installation finishes, press the “Reboot” button to restart your computer and boot into your Proxmox Mail Gateway OS.

What is new in this release:

  • The Mail Gateway is a complete operating system based on Debian Stretch 9.3 with a 4.13.13 kernel, and has a new RESTful API, includes support for all ZFS raid levels, comes with LDAP, IPv4 and IPv6 support, and with a new interface framework based on Sencha ExtJS. For businesses Proxmox offers a new subscription-based support model with access to a stable enterprise repository.
  • New Proxmox Mail Gateway is Open-Source (AGPL,v3):
  • With the new Mail Gateway version 5.0 the company Proxmox has changed the license of it's email security solution and it is now completely open-source, licensed under the GNU Affero GPL, v3. The anti-spam and anti-virus filtering solution includes the full feature-set like high performance and multi-threaded anti-virus engines, countless spam filtering methods, a message tracking center, a unique object-oriented rule system, user management and LDAP, HA clustering functionality (master/slave synchronization via SSH tunnel), an interface for end-user spam quarantine, and many more features.
  • With the license change to the free, copy-left open-source license AGPL, the Proxmox Mail Gateway now offers the same open-source development model and ecosystem like the company's well known Proxmox VE, an open-source platform for enterprise virtualization: The source code of the Mail Gateway is available in the public GIT, issues can be reported in the bug tracker, the channel to discuss and share knowledge is the community forum.
  • The change in licensing also comes with a new support model. Instead of the former annual licensing model which included technical support, the company Proxmox now offers a subscription-based support model. A commercial subscription - recommended for production use - provides access to the stable enterprise package repository and to technical email support. Various subscription levels ranging from community to premium are available starting at EUR 99 for an annual community subscription.
  • New Framework for web-based management Interface:
  • With Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0 the web-based management interface has been completely re-worked and is now based on the Sencha ExtJS framework. With the integrated, central web interface users can access and control all configuration and management tasks such as incoming and outgoing mail traffic, the object-oriented rule system, the message tracking center including all logs and reports, the end-user quarantine web interface, user management, backup/restore, and high availability clustering. Dashboards and statistics provide a quick overview for the IT staff easing their control tasks. If desired advanced tasks can be executed on the command line too.
  • Integrated Reference Documentation:
  • Proxmox Mail Gateway brings a new documentation framework integrated into the GUI which provides a global help function. Users can access and download the technical documentation via the central help-button (available in various formats like html, pdf and epub). A main asset of the new documentation is that it's always version specific to the current user's software version. The new reference documentation is created from man pages which are auto-generated based on the code. The help content itself is written by the developers via comments in the code and is generated using asciiDoc. To participate in the documentation project users can send a patch to the project and propose new content.
  • Other Notable Changes in Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0:
  • Other new features in Proxmox Mail Gateway 5.0 include support for all ZFS raid levels in the ISO installer, LDAP, IPv4 and IPv6 support, ClamAV with Google Safe Browsing database, and one click updates via GUI.

What is new in version :

  • Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has released version 4.0 of its antispam and antivirus solution Proxmox Mail Gateway. All packages have been updated and the new version is now based on Debian Wheezy 7.8. The product, available on the market since ten years, continues its focus on stability and performance. The release is generally available for download on January 20, 2015.
  • Proxmox Mail Gateway is an email security system protecting email servers from spam, viruses, trojans and phishing emails and is managed through an easy, web-based interface. In the integrated Proxmox Message Tracking Center users can get an overview of all email logs. The Mail Gateway can run on a physical system (bare-metal) or as a virtual appliance. For this, the customized Linux kernel already contains all the necessary drivers for qemu/KVM (virtio), VMware tools or Hyper-V integration services.
  • Proxmox Mail Gateway integrates the two high performance and multithreaded antivirus engines ClamAV and Cyren's Zero-Hour Virus Outbreak Protection. This dual approach combines traditional signature-based scanning with the cloud-based immediate scanning capabilities from Cyren and is able to analyze billions of emails in real-time, protecting the network against new spam and malware outbreaks the moment they emerge. The security solution from Cyren is available in Proxmox Mail Gateway since version 3.0 and for an unlimited number of users in all license levels. For maximum virus protection, Avira can be licensed as a third scanner option.
