apoplexy is an open source, completely free and multiplatform graphical application that has been created from the ground up to allow anyone to easily and quickly edit existing levels for the extraordinary Prince of Persia 1 and 2 games.

Features an interactive and intuitive GUI

The software features an interactive and intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface) that has been designed from the offset to allow users to effortlessly edit Prince of Persia 1 and Prince of Persia 2 levels using nothing but their keyboard and mouse.

Can be used to modify the layout of the levels

The software has been engineered in such a way that it can also be used to modify the layout of the levels, the locations of enemies, the tiles in rooms, as well as what happens when the drop and raise buttons are being triggered.

Requires no installation

The apoplexy software requires no installation. It can be used immediately from a terminal emulator application, after saving and unpacking the package downloaded from either Softoware or the project’s official website.

Make sure that you have the SDL2_ttf and SDL2_image packages installed before attempting to run apoplexy. Execute the ‘./apoplexy’ command in the Terminal app, after navigating to the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softoware/apoplexy-2.6b) to start the program.

Needs at least one level file from the DOS version of PoP1 or PoP2

In order to use the apoplexy application, you will have to get at least one level file from the DOS version of either Price or Persia 1 (PoP1) or Price of Persia 2 (PoP2) games. The level file is usually called “LEVELS.DAT” on PoP1 and “PRINCE.DAT” on PoP2.

Make sure that you copy the “LEVELS.DAT” file to the “prince” folder into apoplexy’s source directory, and the “PRINCE.DAT” file to the “prince2” folder. Please note that you will have to use a PRINCE.EXE file for Price of Persia 1.

Runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows

Being a multiplatform application, the apoplexy project that has been created to work on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the Microsoft Windows operating systems. It runs on computers supporting either of the 32 and 64-bit CPU architectures, and supports levels from both Prince of Persia 1 and Prince of Persia 2 games.

What is new in this release:

  • This is the - or at least my - final version of apoplexy. It's time to move on. I enjoyed working on the program and I've learned a lot through the years. This program is free software (libre, also gratis), so feel free to redistribute and/or modify it without my permission.

What is new in version 2.6b:

  • Expanded the screen where PoP1's PRINCE.EXE can be changed.[1]
  • Better handling of PoP2 (static and dynamic) guards with unexpected values.
  • [1] Users can now also change whether the prince has his sword (default, never, always), where the prince wins (level, room), and the environments and enemy resources used for each level.

What is new in version 2.0:

  • The program can now also edit Prince of Persia 2 levels!
  • Some tiles in the editor are now animated.
  • Better loading screen, including animations.
  • Now displays a warning when hovering over marked tiles.
  • Moved the images to various subdirectories.

What is new in version 1.2 Beta:

  • This version adds a screen which can be used to (deliberately) create, change, and fix so-called broken room links, and fixes a minor bug which sometimes caused unintentional changes to events.

Requirements:

  • SDL_ttf
  • SDL_gfx
