Angband is a freely downloadable, cross-platform and open source ncurses-based, text-mode dungeon exploration game inspired by the amazing books written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game can be played on any GNU/Linux terminal/console environment.

A CLI real-time strategy (RTS) game

In this real-time strategy game, the players will be able to explore a pretty deep dungeon, equip themselves with some of the best armor and weapons that they can find, kill lots of monsters, and, in the end, face Morgoth, the dark enemy.

As its developers describe it, Angband is a very addictive game that has a long history. Being developed since 1980, the game was first called Moria, written in the VMS Pascal programming language, and later ported to the C programming language and called UMoria.

Getting started with Angband

From the moment you start compiling Angband, you will notice that it’s a pretty colorful program. The compilation goes like this: you first download the source package from either the game’s official website or from Softoware, save the archive on your Home directory, and unpack it.

Then, open a Terminal app, navigate to the location where you have extracted the archive file (e.g. cd /home/softoware/angband-3.5.1), run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the game. Install it system wide with the ‘sudo make install’ command.

The game runs on its own text-mode window

The most interesting part of the Angband game is that while you will need a terminal emulator application to start it, the game runs on its own text-mode window. Press any key to start the game. At first, you will have to set up your character, then you can start playing the game.

Angband is compatible with any distribution of GNU/Linux, as well as with the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. At the moment, it is compatible with computers supporting either of the 32 or 64-bit CPU architectures.
