Simutrans is an open source, completely free and multiplatform graphical video game implemented in SDL and designed from the offset to provide an economic and transport simulator for all Linux kernel-based and UNIX-like operating systems.

Easily create rail and bus connections

Simutrans allows players to easily create rail and bus connections in order to transport passengers, goods, as well as mail between industries and cities. The game also includes oil tankers and passenger ferries.

The player’s main task in this superb simulation game is to transport all the persons and goods in time, for a prosper society where the natural environment remains untouched.

Features at a glance

Key features include intelligent routing of passengers, vehicles, freight and mail, support for fine tuning the economy, multiplayer, network-based gameplay that supports up to 14 players simultaneously, as well as a customizable engine.

In addition, the game offers a wide variety of graphics, but you can add your own graphics. The player can set his/her own goal, which makes the game suitable for all ages and genre. It is supported on many platforms and languages.

Getting started with Simutrans

For the user’s convenience, the game is freely available for download as pre-built binary packages. To play it, simply download the package that corresponds to your computer’s hardware architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).

Save the archive somewhere on your Home directory, use your favorite archive manager utility to unpack it, open the outputted folder and double click on the ‘simutrans’ executable to start the game.

Runs on Linux, BSD, Windows and Mac

The game is compatible with all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as with the FreeBSD, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. It has been written entirely in the C++ programming language, around the SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) framework. Simutrans currently runs on 32 and 64-bit computer platforms.
