Bugs On The Run is an artificial life simulation where organisms (bugs) move in a 2D world and try to survive. There are various ways to control the simulation and there is an emphasis on high performance for some settings. In the main folder an application is included, and for developers carbon C source files and binaries for an Xcode project with classic- and carbon-events versions are also available. An older legacy version 1.2 is PPC-only, and has many types of projects for developers (CFM/Mach-o, classic/carbon events, res/nibs, CW/Xcode, C/FutureBasic) - is still available for download as well.

What is new in this release:

  • New in 1.7:
  • Replaced the MLTE text window with the Terminal app. With Print Events menu item enabled, Turbo runs 4-5x faster than before, Turbo + 60 FPS runs 40x faster than before.
  • New simulation algorithm is cleaner and more elegant, and results in about 10% faster Hyper speed.
  • Added a new second application called Bugs On The Run S (simple) which has a fixed background, and in which bugs only move around without eating, replicating or dying and stay the same number. This application runs significantly faster in Turbo and Turbo + 60 FPS speeds (about 2x), and more than 10x faster in Hyper speed. It has no terminal because there are no events and no stats to report except number of iterations so far which shows on the main window anyway. Also, some of the preferences are inactive in this version.
  • In the regular version you have to launch the unix executable alias. in the simple version just launch the bug shaped application.
  • New website homepage.
