GNOME Nibbles is an open source puzzle game where the main goal is to control a snake and score as many points as you can. It has been designed from the ground up to be used under the GNOME desktop environment.

Features at a glance

Key features include up to six evil AI worms, network multiplayer, integration with the GNOME desktop environment, as well as an easy to use and straightforward graphical user interface written in the GTK+ GUI toolkit.

Just like any other Snake implementation, the snake automatically moves around the board. Therefore, players must control it in the direction of a diamond, while avoiding the walls placed around it, using the arrow keys on their keyboards.

Getting started with GNOME Nibbles

When opened under GNOME, the game presents users with an empty black board. In order to start a new game, players must click the "New Game" option from the program's entry in the GNOME Panel. The total score of each worm can be viewed under the black board.

Once the player riches a certain score, the game will automatically advance to the next level with the remaining snakes, until all worms are dead. You can also pause or end a game at any point, simply by clicking the respective options from the App Menu.

From the Preferences dialog, users can choose from four pre-defined speed levels, enable or disable random play of levels, sounds and fake bonuses, starting level, as well as to set the number of human and AI players.

Users can set keyboard shortcuts and view the score board

In addition, you can set the keyboard shortcuts for four worms, enable or disable relative movement, and change their color. It is also important to mention that the Preferences dialog can only be accessed when the game is stopped.

The score board can be viewed at any time, even during a game, and scores are organized based on speed. Detailed gameplay instructions and strategy tips can be found in the program's documentation by accessing the Help option from the App Menu.
