GNOME Mines (or gnomine, as it is known among connoisseurs) is an open source piece of software that provides users with a board/puzzle game in the style of Minesweeper game that was distributed along with the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Designed for GNOME

It has been designed from the ground up to work and integrated with the GNOME desktop environment. Just like Minesweeper, the object of the game is to clear the board while avoiding the mines.

The game starts with four different grids, 8x8 with 10 mines, 16x16 with 40 mines, 30x16 with 99 mines, and a custom one where you can define the horizontal and vertical width, as well as percentage and number of mines.

Each board features covered squares and the player's "job" is to clear the squares, one by one, without stepping on a mine. If you step on a mine, the game is over and you can start a new one by pressing the "Start a new game" button displayed on the right bottom corner of the window.

The gameplay is time-based

The gameplay is time-based, therefore the application features intelligent pause functionality, which will automatically pause the game when the main window is inactive. At any time you can receive a hint for your next move by pressing the Hint button.

The game will end when you clear the board and don't hit any mine. At the end of each game, the program will automatically prompt users with the score board, which features the ability to start a new game.

The Preferences dialog lets users to enable or disable warning messages if too many flags are placed next to a number, as well as usage of "I'm not sure" flags during the gameplay. The score board and the documentation can be accessed at any time from the App Menu via the GNOME Panel.
