Remind is an open source, cross-platform and free command-line/graphical software project implemented in Tcl/Perl and designed from the offset to act as a practical calendar and alarm application for your Linux kernel-based or UNIX-like operating systems.

Features at a glance

Key features include mature date calculation, sunset, sunrise and moon phases, support for both Hebrew and Gregorian calendars, PostScript, Plain Text and HTML output, pop-up alarms, multilingual messages, as well as holiday and exceptions management.

Additionally, it comes with timed reminders, support for over 12 different languages, support for numerous POSIX operating systems, and various scripts that help users to easily create a powerful and useful web calendar server.

At the moment, the software is available for download only as a source package, but it might by available in the official software repositories of your GNU/Linux distribution, so install it using the built-in Software Center app. Remind can be installed on 32 or 64-bit computer platforms.

Getting started with Remind

If it’s not available on your distro’s repositories, download the latest release from the project’s website (see the homepage link at the end of the article) or via Softoware, save the archive on your Home directory and use an archive manager tool to unpack it.

In a terminal emulator application, use the ‘cd’ command to move to the location where you’ve uncompressed the source package (e.g. cd /home/softoware/remind-03.01.13). Run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the program.

After a successful compilation, run the ‘sudo make install’ command to install Remind system wide. To use the command-line version, run the ‘remind’ command in the Terminal app. You can also use the ‘rem2ps’ command to generate a PostScript calendar from Remind’s output. To use the graphical user interface, run the ‘tkremind’ command.

What is new in this release:

  • BUG FIX: Allow specification of margins as low as 0 points in rem2ps, courtesy of Jonathan Kamens.
  • BUG FIX: Permit compilation with gcc 2.95 (which doesn't allow variable declarations after non-declaration statements in a block.)
  • BUG FIX: Several minor documentation errors corrected courtesy of Simon Ruderich.
  • BUG FIX: Spurious test harness failure was fixed.
