BitTorrent is an open source application that provides users with a straightforward way of downloading torrent files over the Internet. It is a P2P (Peer-to-peer) client software designed for older Linux distributions.

The application is extremely easy to use, allowing users to start downloading torrents from the get-go, simply by clicking or downloading .torrent files and load them into the client's main window.

Features at a glance

Its key features include support for setting the maximum upload and download rates, UPnP (automatic port mapping), associate torrent files with the application, launch the client when Linux starts, system tray integration, as well as support for multiple languages.

In addition, users can view detailed information about each torrent, such as total peers, swarm speed, discarded data, tracker, infohash, pieces, included files, peer list, download and upload rate, as well as remaining time and its complete name.

The graphical interface is user-friendly and familiar, from which popular torrent clients like uTorrent were inspired. It allows users to quickly add a new torrent, start, resume, remove active torrents, as well as to open the folder that contains the downloaded files.

Under the hood

Under the hood, we can report that the application is written in Python and the graphical user interface is designed with the GTK+ GUI toolkit, which transforms it into a platform-independent application that supports GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Unfortunately, this software is no longer maintained since 2009. It was written in the 2.7 version of the Python programming language and uses some deprecated Twisted package. While it’s actively maintained for the Mac and Windows platforms, it will no longer work on modern Linux operating systems!

Bottom line

If you want a decent and actively maintained torrent client application for your Linux distribution, we suggest the Transmission, Deluge, KTorrent, QTorrent, or qBittorrent. All of them are available for download from Softoware.

Requirements:

  • Python
  • gtk+
