aMule is an open source and cross-platform application that provides users with a eMule file-sharing program that supports the eDonkey2000 network and a wide range of operating system. It is a fork of the xMule application.

Key features

Key features include support for the ED2K and Source Exchange networks, leecher banning, download queue, online signature, secure file transfers, IP filter, system tray integration, as well as adware and virus free.

In addition, it features Intelligent Corruption Handler (ICH) system for checking for corruptions while downloading, source management, automatic priorities, file previews, friends system, sharing functionality, slot allocation, support for remote clients, graphical and command-line interfaces.

The GUI

The application boasts an easy to use and familiar user interface, with standard functionality specific to P2P clients. Therefore, if you've used popular applications like eMule or xMule, you will have no problems using this piece of software.

When starting the application for the first time, it will ask you to download a new list of servers. Selecting yes it will be the smart choice here, as it will provide you with a hassle-free experience from the get-go.

The Downloads window will be opened by default. Therefore, all you have to do to download files is to click the Search button and search for whatever your want to find. Keep in mind though, that the application does not encourage piracy and copyright infringement.

You can easily switch between several ED2K networks using the Networks window, chat with friends from the Messages section, view various statistics related to download speed, connections and upload speed from the Statistics window, and import partially downloaded files using the Import button.

Bottom line

In conclusion, aMule is a decent P2P client for the open source ecosystem. However, modern users prefer to use a BitTorrent client for downloading and sharing files.
