AbiWord is an open source, freely distributed, simple and easy-to-use word processing application designed especially for distributions of Linux that aim to be low on resources. The software includes lots of features that make it useful for daily work or personal needs.

The AbiWord project is unique among word processors in its drive to become a fully cross-platform word processing tool. It is quite similar in functionality with old versions of the Microsoft Word text editing software, being suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks.

Offers support for editing high-standard documents

AbiWord offers built-in support for editing high-standard document formats, including Microsoft Word (DOC) documents, Apache OpenOffice.org (ODF) documents, Rich Text Format (RTF) documents, WordPerfect (WPD) documents, HTML web pages, as well as many other document formats.

Another interesting feature of AbiWord is the advanced document layout functionality, which lets users to use all sorts of style elements to enhance their documents, such as tables, images, bullets, lists, footnotes, and endnotes.

AbiWord speaks your language

The application includes a broad range of dictionaries, which bring supports for over 30 languages. A built-in spell checker is also included in AbiWord, so you won’t have to worry about your writing mistakes (typos).

Among other features, we can mention the Mail Merge capabilities that lets the application automate a certain task for you, and the powerful plugin architecture that allows you to enhance its default functionality through plugins.

A multiplatform word processing utility

AbiWord is a multiplatform word processing utility that has been successfully tested on a wide range of GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the FreeBSD, Solaris, QNX and Microsoft Windows operating system.

It is fully compatible with both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86) CPU architectures and uses few resources, which means that you can install and use it on any computer. It is usually distributed on all GNU/Linux operating systems that use a lightweight desktop environment/window manager.
