KNOPPIX is an open source Linux distribution that gained its popularity from the fact that the ISO image provides users with a modern live environment, included a large collection of applications, and supported numerous hardware components.

Distributed as Live DVDs for English and German speaking users

It is distributed as two Live CD and DVD ISO images with support for the English and German speaking users. The main website of the project is also available in dual language format, English and German, especially because the developer is of German nationality.

The Live DVD consists of a vast collection of GNU/Linux software, support numerous graphics cards, sound cards, USB devices, various peripherals and SCSI disks. It can be used to boot an existing OS, run a memory test, or start the live environment in safe graphics mode.

Based on the KDE desktop environment

It was always based on the KDE desktop environment, which provides users with a very modern, eye-candy desktop experience and access to top-notch open source applications and utilities.

To run KNOPPIX, you will need to have a computer with at least an Intel or AMD-compatible CPU (i486 and up), 120 MB of RAM for the graphical desktop (500MB recommended), a bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive or a USB flash disk, a standard SVGA-compatible video card, and a USB or PS/2 mouse.

Default applications

Default applications include the Apache OpenOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) image editor, MPlayer video player, as well as various other utilities for data rescue, system repair and network analysis tasks.

KNOPPIX Live CDs are available for download separately with LXDE

As mentioned before, this is the Live DVD of the KNOPPIX Linux distribution. A Live CD edition also exists on Softoware, built around the lightweight LXDE desktop environment. Whether you use KNOPPIX to rescue a broken system, recover data from a damaged hard drive, as you main operating system or as an educational demo for non-profit organizations, it can deliver anything you want at any moment you want.

What is new in this release:

  • Version 8.1 of KNOPPIX is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (stretch), testing (buster) and unstable (sid) for newer graphics drivers or desktop software packages. It uses Linux kernel 4.12.7 and Xorg 7.7 (core 1.19.3) for supporting current computer hardware.
  • Kernel Patches: cloop, aufs, TCP Stealth.
  • Both 32bit and 64bit kernel supporting both old and new computers, the 64bit version also supporting systems with more than 4GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks. The bootloader will start the 64bit kernel automatically if a 64bit-capable CPU is detected (if not manually specified otherwise).
  • For Computers that can only start from CD, not from DVD or USB flash pen, a tiny bootable CD image has been placed in the "KNOPPIX" folder, which can be burned and used together with the full USB or DVD version in order to start on old computers.
  • New in 8.1:
  • BFQ (Budget Fair Queue Scheduler), now included in the standard kernel within the multipath scheduler, austomatically activated for slow disks,
  • Kernel and system software (Debian stretch+buster) updated,
  • LibreOffice 5.4.1, Gimp 2.8.20
  • Chromium 60.0.3112.78 and Firefox (ex Iceweasel) 55 Web Browser with ublock Origin and NoScript Security-Plugin (--> Firefox no longer supports sound, check "bugs" section)
  • Automatic expansion of overlay partition on USB flash pen without reboot (!) after 1:1 copy of ISO hybrid image on USB flash pen (see New hybrid layout),
  • Personal remastering option when copying to USB flash pen using flash-knoppix
  • New programs: etherape (graphical network monitor), archivemount, terminator (terminal emulator with many features),
  • Mathematical software maxima 5.40, also integrated as live session in Texmacs,
  • New version of 3D window manager compiz 0.9.13.1,
  • LXDE (Default) with filemanager PCMANFM 1.2.5, KDE 5.8 (boot option knoppix desktop=kde), GNOME 3.24 (boot option knoppix desktop=gnome, DVD version only),

What is new in version 7.7.1:

  • Version 7.7.1 of KNOPPIX is based on the usual picks from Debian stable (jessie), testing (stretch) and unstable (sid) for newer graphics drivers or desktop software packages. It uses Linux kernel 4.7.9 (not affected by the "Dirty Cow Bug") and xorg 7.7 (core 1.18.1) for supporting current computer hardware.
  • Kernel Patches: cloop, aufs, BFQ, TCP Stealth.
  • In addition to the 32bit standard kernel, the 64bit version of the same kernel is installed on the DVD edition, supporting systems with more than 4GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks. In the DVD version, the bootloader will start the 64bit kernel automatically if a 64bit-capable CPU is detected (if not manually specified otherwise).
  • New in 7.7.1:
  • Kernel and system software (Debian Jessie+Stretch) updated,
  • New, experimental version of 3D window manager compiz 0.9.12.2,
  • LXDE (Default) with filemanager PCMANFM 1.2.4, KDE 5.7.4 (boot option knoppix desktop=kde, DVD version only), GNOME 3.22 (boot option knoppix desktop=gnome, DVD version only),

  • Experimental support for UEFI-Boot and Secure Boot after installation on USB flash disk.
  • Versioning: If many Knoppix-installed USB flash disks or harddisks are present, the boot system now finds the kernel-matching KNOPPIX overlay automatically -> avoids errors caused by mismatching Kernel/System/Overlay versions.
  • The live installer flash-knoppix now shows a "honest" progress bar by measuring the real space allocation during copy. Also, the syslinux-supplied master boot record is used instead of ms-sys.
