DebEX is an open source Linux project based and inspired by the popular Debian GNU/Linux distribution. It has been engineered to be deployed only on 64-bit compatible hardware. It's also the first GNU/Linux distribution to bring the GNOME 3.14 desktop environment and Linux kernel 4.2, as well as the KDE 4.14.3 and KDE Plasma 5 desktop environments on the KDE edition.

It is distributed in three editions

It is distributed in three editions, one with the LXQt desktop environment, one with the KDE Plasma, and another one with the GNOME and MATE desktops, as Live DVD ISO-hybrid images, based on the Jessie and Sid versions of the Debian operating system, and designed to support only the 64-bit architecture. The default language is English.

The Live DVD boot menu is very simple

The boot menu of all Live DVDs is very simple, providing users with the ability to boot the OS with normal settings, to copy the entire live environment to RAM (computer's system memory) and ejecting the media, as well as to run the operating system in safe graphics mode (failsafe) if your video card is not supported by the first two options.

Uses a hybrid ISO image

DebEX Barebone uses a ISO-hybrid image, which means that users can easily deploy it on a USB stick or DVD discs. The system can be installed from within the live session using the DebEX Installer application, a clone of the Ubiquity installer utility used in many Debian-based Linux operating systems.

Provides a snappy and uncluttered desktop experience

All three editions of DebEX provide users with a snappy and uncluttered Linux desktop experience, featuring a single-panel layout, from where users can launch their favorite apps, interact with opened windows or switch between virtual desktop environments. The Xfce edition also features a dock (application launcher). The latest stable release of the GNOME 3 desktop environment is used in the GNOME/MATE flavor.

Default applications

Default applications include the Iceweasel web browser, Icedove email client, Wicd network manager, GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), PCManFM file manager, Leafpad text editor, LXTerminal terminal emulator, Xarchiver archive manager, AbiWord word processing tool, LXMusic music player, and Synaptic Package Manager. Google Chrome is also installed so you can watch Netflix movies.

Bottom line

The main purpose of the DebEX Barebone Linux operating systems is to combine bleeding-edge Debian technologies with the latest Linux kernel packages, resulting in a perfect computing environment for machines supporting the 64-bit architecture.
