Cub Linux (formerly Chromixium OS) is a free and open source distribution of Linux derived from the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and inspired by Google’s Chrome OS / Chromium OS projects.

Distributed as a 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVD images

Cub Linux is distributed as 64-bit and 32-bit Live DVD ISO images that have approximately 900 MB in size and contain software packages optimized for each of the aforementioned instruction set architectures. The user can write the ISO image on a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive (recommended) in order to boot it from the BIOS of a computer.

Can be used in live mode or installed

The Chromixium Live DVD comes with a minimal boot menu, which includes the ability to start the live system with normal configuration, in safe graphics mode (in case your video card is not recongnized by the first boot option) or in debug more.

Uses a highly customized version of GNOME

The distro features a highly customized version of the GNOME graphical desktop environment, made to be identical in functionality, as well as look and feel with Chrome OS’ desktop interface. To achieve this, the developers used the Openbox window manager, Compton desktop compositor, Plank dock and LXPanel. By default, users will be dropped to a login screen where they have to use the “user” password (without quotes) to login.

Default applications

Apparently, the Cub Linux developers tried their best to bring the Chrome OS look and functionality to regular Linux users. Therefore, it is based on the open-source Chromium web browser (with the Pepperflash plugin) and includes various web apps, for GMail, Gogole Drive and YouTube.

The default file manager is Nautilus (Files) and a system tray area is provided for those of you who want to manage their network connections and control the system volume, as well as to access the built-in calendar and essential system functions (restart, shutdown, etc.).
