AV Linux is an open source Linux operating system based on Debian/GNU Linux and built around the Xfce desktop environment. It includes a wide range of applications geared toward multimedia enthusiasts.

Distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD

It is distributed as a single, and quite big, Live DVD ISO image that supports only the 32-bit (i386) PAE architecture which, in combination with the lightweight Xfce window manager, it is perfect for low-end computers.

A distribution of Linux for digital content creation

As mentioned before, the distribution provides users with a large collection of video and audio production software, ranging from simple audio and video players to sophisticated video editors and CD rippers. Additionally, it comes with a patched Linux kernel package that allows for low-latency audio performance. The Live DVD can be used as-is or installed on a local disk drive.

Xfce is in charge of the graphical environment

The Xfce live environment loads very fast and comprises a dock (application launcher) on the right side of the screen, as well as a taskbar on the top, from where users can manage opened windows, switch desktops, and launch apps.

Default applications

Default applications include the Google Chrome and Iceweasel web browsers, Icedove email clent, Skype, Steam for Linux, Transmission BitTorrent client, XChat IRC client, KompoZer, and Mumble.

Contains a vast amount of multimedia related apps

Among the video-oriented apps, we can mention Blender, Cinerella, DeVeDe, FFMultiplex, HandBrake, LiVES, Kdenlive, OpenShot, TV-Viewer, VLC Media Player, WinFF, Xine, Xjadeo, Totem, Cheese, and Desktop Recorder.

Audio-oriented applications include Amsynth, Ardour, Audacity, Clementine, EasyTAG, FeSTige, guitarix, harmonySEQ, Luppp, Non suite, QMidiArp, Qsampler, Qsynth, Qtractor, Renoise, Rosengarden, and much more.

Bottom line

Of course, AV Linux comes with many other utilities and useful software. Because of this, we strongly recommend AV Linux if you own a computer from the 21th century and you want to transform it into a powerful and professional multimedia production machine. It can also be used as a general-purpose operating system for your everyday tasks.
