Transmission is an open source BitTorrent client for the GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X operating systems. It provides users with a lightweight, low on resources torrent downloader that supports multiple desktop environments.

Features at a glance

Key features include full encryption, support for PEX (Peer exchange), µTP (Micro Transport Protocol), DHT (Distributed Hash Table), Magnet Link, Local Peer Discovery, native GTK+ and Qt graphical user interfaces, as well as remote control.

Its user interface is very simple and intuitive, allowing users to quickly open a torrent file, start, pause or remove active downloads, limit download and/or upload speed, enable alternative speed limits, view statistics and total ratio.

In addition, users can sort torrents by active, downloading, seeding, paused, finished, verifying and error. Furthermore, a built-in search functionality will allow users to quickly find a certain torrent file.

When adding a torrent file, you will be able to choose the destination folder, choose which files to download, set the torrent priority, delete the torrent file, as well as to start it immediately. All these options can be set in the application’s preferences dialog and automatically applied for each new file.

Supported distributions of Linux

Officially supported Linux distributions include Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, CentOS, Debian, Arch Linux, Puppy Linux, Slackware, Pardus, Gentoo, Foresight, and Platypux. In addition it supports the FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and Solaris UNIX-like operating systems.

The application also works on various popular embedded systems, including Networked Media Tank, Western Digital WD MyBook, ReadyNAS, D-Link DNS-323 & CH3SNAS, Synology, IP Box 9000, Thecus, MemUp LX, and Drobo.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Transmission is one of those unique and really great applications that you cannot live without. It is our favorite BitTorrent client, especially when working under the KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE or Xfce desktop environments. We really wish that it could be integrated into GNOME.
