UDPcast project is a file transfer tool that can send data simultaneously to many destinations on a LAN. This can for instance be used to install entire classrooms of PC's at once.
The advantage of UDPcast over using other methods (nfs, ftp, whatever) is that UDPcast uses Ethernet's multicast abilities: it won't take longer to install 15 machines than it would to install just 2.
UDPcast is released under the GPL 2.0 license.
UDPcast can be started from the included linuxrc boot disk for OS installations, or from the command line when using it for other purposes.
What is new in this release:
- Supports booting and saving config on USB media
- Builtin boot server (DHCP+TFTP) to allow booting receivers from sender via the network
- Interactive choice of network interface, if there is more than one
- More compact image thanks to uclibc
What is new in version 20081116:
- Statistics are printed less often (only once every half second or at a configurable interval).
- A workaround was made for an lseek bug on Linux.
- A longer DHCP timeout is used in order to deal with slow switches.
