Buildroot is a set of patches and Makefiles that makes it easy for developers to generate a root filesystem and cross-compilation toolchain for their target Linux system, using the uClibc C library.

Buildroot is a very useful tool for embedded system software development.

What is new in this release:

  • This version fixes critical issues discovered since the 2012.11 release, most importantly with non-largefile builds on recent Ubuntu versions.

What is new in version 2012.11:

  • This version adds a large number of new packages (43): at91bootstrap3, ccid and pscs-lite, gnupg, opus, Linux-pam, perl, python3, qemu, tirpc and rpcbind, adds binutils 2.23.1, GCC 4.7.2, and recent Codebench/Linaro toolchains.
  • The default is now GCC 4.6.
  • The manual has been reworked and extended, and lots of package license annotations added.

What is new in version 2012.05:

  • This version adds 34 new packages (including Systemd, polarssl, and a number of networking packages), adds GCC 4.7, uClibc 0.9.33.1, and support for Linaro external ARM toolchains, supports Microblaze (using an external toolchain), deprecates Xtensa support, adds more QEMU defconfigs (including Microblaze and e500 PowerPC.Defconfigs for Beaglebone, Pandaboard, and Freescale mx53qsb), adds patch series support in apply-patches.sh, and adds other updates and bugfixes.

What is new in version 2011.11:

  • Support for local packages and package overrides was added.
  • Documentation was moved to AsciiDoc and extended.
  • Running "make manual" will generate it.
  • There were internal and external toolchain fixes and updates, and the sysroot copying step was optimised.
  • Linux kernel extension infrastructure was added.
  • Xenomai and RTAI support was added.
  • Package dir/name arguments were dropped from {GEN,AUTO,CMAKE}TARGETS.
  • New packages were included: bluez-utils, cifs-utils, fftw, fluxbox, json-c, libev, libftdi, libgeotiff, libmodbus, libplayer, live555, ngrep, noip, opencv, openocd, picocom, poco, portaudio, pulseaudio, pv, rtai, vala, and xenomai.

What is new in version 2011.05:

  • Updated/fixed packages: makedevs

What is new in version 2011.02:

  • A proper split of host and target binaries was established.
  • The cross pkg-config now also automatically returns correct values for cross compilation, without needing any environment variables to be set.
  • This release also included external toolchain and crosstool-ng backend improvements and out-of-the-box support for downloading/using CodeSourcery toolchains, a rework of how hardware boards are supported, support for a number of qemu configs, a generic cmake infrastructure similar to the existing GENTARGETS/AUTOTARGETS, and support for bzr downloads in addition to the existing git/SVN/FTP/HTTP support.

What is new in version 2010.11:

  • An experimental crosstool-NG backend was provided for toolchain handling.
  • In the long term, this is expected to replace the internal toolchain handling.
  • Kconfig infrastructure was updated (from 2.6.36) with savedefconfig and nconfig support.
  • A convenience Makefile wrapper is now created in the output directory for out-of-tree builds (make O=).
  • Download handling was reworked and support for git/SVN downloads was added.
  • Support for ARM Cortex A9 and Sparc LEON variants was added, and support for Alpha, Cris, IA64, and Sparc64 was removed.

What is new in version 2009.11:

  • Simplified / cleaned up output directories, thanks to Thomas Petazzoni
  • Sane clean/distclean make targets
  • Defconfigs are now located in configs/ for easy browsing like U-Boot / the Linux kernel
  • Support for the ARM cortex A8 architecture and GCC 4.4.2 support
  • New packages: divine, gvfs, libarchive, libmicrohttpd, sdl_sound, swfdec and sysstat
  • A bunch of more packages are converted into Makefile.autotools.in format, bringing cleanups and fixes various build issues.

What is new in version 2009.08:
