Holder.js generated images are all rendered via the HTML 5 canvas element.
The README file included with the download package also details ways of styling the placeholder with various new themes.
Works for most modern desktop and mobile browsers.
Usage:
Just add a line of code like this, to create a 400 per 400 px placeholder image:
