As its name suggests, GNOME Icon Theme Symbolic (gnome-icon-theme-symbolic) is a collection of symbolic icons that have been specifically designed for the GNOME graphical desktop environment. The package is distributed by default in any GNOME installation.
GNOME Icon Theme Symbolic's purpose is to extend the base icon theme that follows the Tango style guidelines for specific purposes. This would include OSD (On-screen Display) messages, panel system/notification area, and possibly menu icons.
The icons included in the GNOME Icon Theme Symbolic package follow the naming specification, but they've a -symbolic suffix. Therefore, only applications specifically looking up these symbolic icons will render them.
Includes all sorts of scalable icons
In the package, you will find all sorts of scalable icons in the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) graphics format. There are icons for various mimetypes, actions, places, status, emblems, devices, applications, categories, as well as emotes. The package can be easily installed on other open source desktop environments that are compatible with GNOME, such as MATE or Cinnamon, straight from the main software repositories of your GNU/Linux operating system (the package’s name is gnome-icon-theme-symbolic).
Manual installation instructions
If you want to install it from the source package, you can do so by downloading the latest version of the project from Softoware, save the archive somewhere on your computer, extract its contents, open the Terminal app and navigate to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softoware/gnome-icon-theme-symbolic-3.12.0).In the terminal emulator, run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the project, just like you would do with any other open source application. Finally, after a successful compilation, run the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user to install it system wide and make it available to all users on your machine.
