Buttonized is an open source and freely downloadable icon theme especially designed for the GNOME graphical desktop environment. It can also be used with other open source desktops, such as Cinnamon, KDE, LXDE or Xfce.

Contains over 7,600 icons

It contains over 7,600 icons, divided into several directories, including actions, animations, apps, categories, devices, emblems, emotes, locales, mimetypes, places, status, and stock. There are also icons for the Dropbox application, including emblems.

All icons are in PNG format, scalable

All icons are scalable, but distributed in the popular PNG (Portable Network Graphics) file format and not as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) images, as one would have expect from such as huge collection of icons.

Getting started with Buttonized

To install this icon theme on your desktop environment, first download the latest release from the project’s homepage (see link at the end of the article), save it on your Home directory, and unpack it.

Open your file manager and right click on an empty area on your Home directory. Choose the "Create New Folder" option. Rename the folder as .themes (yes, with the dot in front of the name, as the folder will be hidden automatically by the system).

To view hidden folders/files use the “View hidden files” entry on the main menu of your file manager. Move the extracted directory to the .themes folder. Then, open your Control Center app, go to the "Themes" section, and select the theme.

It’s compatible with all GNU/Linux operating systems

The Buttonized icon theme is compatible with all GNU/Linux operating systems that use one of the supported desktop environments. It is independent of a hardware platform, so you can use it on 32-bit or 64-bit PCs.

What is new in this release:

  • This release returns this project to an actively maintained status. Release 4.0 was the first step in bringing the project up to date while 5.0 starts the projects total rehaul.
  • Changes are being made to bring more uniformity to the over all look and appeal. Adding icons to match new needs of the various Desktop Environments, in particular KDE but XFCE, Gnome and LXDE as well.
  • Several new Distribution specific icons created and added to the set that includes 94 different distributions. These can be found in the places sub set with distribution-logo and start-here icons.
  • Future updates will work on status and panel icon needs and issues as well as new icons. At some point there will be a purge of deprecated icons. Most likely at the end of the 5.X series.
  • Icons for Locales. (They are found under scalable/locales) These Location Icons conform to the ISO 3166-1-alpha-2 two letter country code standards for the naming convention, of which there are 248 official codes. All names are capitilized to conform with proper standards (I.E. AA.png) I used the flags for those countries (or areas, who knew Antartica had its own code and flag) to create corresponding Icons. Though the Open Desktop Convention does not include this in the Icon Specifications I decided this was important so that those who need to use Locale Icons will have them available.
  • There are 146 additional Icons that follow the ISO 639-1 two letter Language code standard. The naming convention for these Icons using lower case. (I.E. aa.png) These are styled to be used as overlay Icons.
  • The ISO two letter Country Code Specification can be found here (in English):
  • the ISO 639-1 two letter language codes can be found here:
  • Most Applications are now being seen when you first select this set. Some programs don't change because the program itself does not follow Open Desktop Icon Standards. You will have to manually change the Icon if you want a consistent look.
