Mapyrus is a graphical software that helps you to plot Geographic Information System (GIS) data to PostScript, PDF, SVG and PNG image files. It is implemented in Java and runs as either a utility program, a Java Servlet, or as a web server.

The application offers a BASIC-like scripting language, support for reading GIS datasets, it can be easily integrated into bigger apps, supports reusable and drawing routines, displaying and reading of GIS (Geographic Information System) tables, datasets and text files, and much more.

Gettings started with Mapyrus

To use the Mapyrus application on your GNU/Linux system, you will have to download the latest version from Softoware, where it is distributed for free as a ZIP archive, save the file somewhere on your computer, extract its contents using your favorite archive manager, open the outputted folder and double-click on the mapyrus.jar file.

If double-clicking on the JAR file has no effect, you must open the Terminal app installed on your OS, go to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softoware/mapyrus-1.401) and run the ‘java -jar mapyrus.jar’ command.

The application will open, presenting users with a maps of Europe and USA. Please take a look at the tutorials to see some examples on how to plot GIS (Geographic Information System) data and export it to image files.

Runs on any operating system supported by Java

Mapyrus is an open source, flexible, standalone, freely-available and platform-independent program implemented entirely in the Java programming language, which means that it is supported on the GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, MicroSoft Windows, Mac OS X, and any other operating system where the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is available.

At the moment, it is distributed as an all-in-one package that contains pre-built binaries in the JAR and WAR file format, as well as the comprehensive documentation with numerous examples and tutorials. The software has been successfully tested on 32-bit and 64-bit installations of the aforementioned OSes.
