Genesis is designed to facilitate the distribution of family history databases - and updates to such databases - to recipients such as family members and friends, and make the contents of the database readily accessible to users who may not be expert in the use of genealogy software.

The program utilises a standardised approach to navigating the database, with a context menu and corresponding function keys to perform most of the common functions a user requires to navigate and view the database. The use of function keys only requires the user to point at an item of interest before pressing the key in order to obtain information or performing a function, for example, pointing at a date of birth and pressing F6 in order to see the source of that item of information.

Genesis works in tandem with a file sharing system (such as Dropbox) to provide for largely automated publication facilities to a selected audience, and the facility only requires the originator to invoke a "publish" function in order to distribute additional and replacement files (and only those necessary) to recipients, who need only launch Genesis on their computers and respond to instructions in order to apply the updates to their database.

Genesis is specifically designed to read databases created with Legacy, the genealogy package from Millennium Corporation. Legacy Version 7.5 and 8 databases are accepted.

What is new in this release:

This version is a revision to resolve a few issues arising under Windows 10. At the same time, a number of errors and shortcomings have been corrected and a number of improvements made. Among others, Genesis now uses the file compression functions built in to the Microsoft .NET framework. As a result, it requires version 4.5.1 or later of the framework and will no longer run under Windows XP. Other changes include an improved paging control for scrolling through records or image thumbnails and a change to the database strcture which considerably reduces the disk space it requires.

What is new in version 2.0.93:

  • The major new feature is that Genesis now handles Legacy Version 8 as well as Version 7.5 databases.
  • Legacy databases are now converted to a new Genesis format, which can be up to 4 times more compact.
  • A support function has been added (for registered copies only).
  • The family tree display has been improved.
  • The layout of a few important windows has been improved.
  • A notes search facility has been added.
  • Several other functions have been improved - see the Readme file at the end of the installation process.
  • Problems with launching a newly-installed copy of Genesis and when updating to a new version have been corrected
