Doomsday Engine is an open source, cross-platform and freely distributed 3D-graphics enhanced game engine in the style of the Doom, Hexen, and Heretic games. It's aim is to create versions of the Heretic, Hexen and Doom games that feel the same as the original ones, but powered by modern, advanced techniques.

Features at a glance

Key features hardware-accelerated 3D graphics (Direct3D and OpenGL), sound effects (DirectSound3D), 16-player multiplayer over Internet or LAN, shadow effects, dynamic lighting, 3D models, particle effects, dynamic light effects, lens flares, simple shadows for objects, support for high-resolution textures, 3D skyboxes, as well as an easy-to-use game selection screen.

Additionally, the project features support for loading add-on resources on-the-fly, the ability to allow clients to join games in progress, a built-in BSP builder, player movement smoothing and prediction, TCP-based client and server networking, OpenGL-based renderer, background reverb and echo effects, standalone server, server management, smart texture filtering, and support for up to 15 players.

Supported operating systems

Doomsday Engine is a platform-independent software written in the C, C++ and Python programming languages. It has been successfully tested on the GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures are supported at this time.

Mandatory requirements

When using the Doomsday Engine to create FPS games, it is a must to own a FreeDoom or a commercial/shareware Doom/Heretic/Hexen wadfile, a computer that has a graphics card with hardware accelerated OpenGL support, as well as the SDL, SDL-mixer and SDL-net (svga-lib for console) packages.

In addition, it is required to have the soundpack files from Sycraft.org for providing background music on your games, especially if your system does not support MIDI files. Also, see the homepage link below for further information, and take a look at jDUI (UI enhancement).

What is new in version 1.9.0 Beta 6:

  • Redesigned, more powerful control bindings subsystem. Axis controls can be bound to player controls in the same way as keys. There is a stack of binding contexts that allows using the same key/control for multiple things depending on the game and UI state (see listbcontexts:ccmd).
  • UI graphics tune-up. A new "busy" mode was added, replacing the old startup screen and progress bars. In the games, fonts are sharpened with HQ2x scaling.
  • OpenGL rendering plugin integrated into the engine, and support for Direct3D dropped. This eases future development of the renderer significantly.
  • BSP and gl node builder plugin integrated into the engine. Existing BSP and gl node data present in maps is now ignored, we opt to always build our own.
  • New Materials system.
