BASH History Suggest Box (previously known as BASH Command History Completion) is an open source command-line software written in C and designed to improve the Bash command completion from history functionality of a Linux Terminal.

The command completion functionality is a lot easier with this tool

Also known as HSTR, BASH History Suggest Box has been engineered in such a way that it makes the command completion functionality in Bash a lot easier to use, as well as much faster than using the CTRL+R key combination.

How does it work?

Think of BASH History Suggest Box as a drop-in replacement to the default Bash history functionality that can be accessed with the CTRL+R keyboard shortcut, allowing users to manage the command history, as well as to bookmark your favorite commands. To better understand how the software works, please take a look at the following video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPF29NyXe2U.

Supported operating systems

The program has been tested with the Arch Linux, Debian, Linux Mint, as well as with the Ubuntu 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 and 14.04 LTS Linux operating systems. It has also been ported to the Mac OS X operating system, and detailed configuration options are provided on the official homepage.

Under the hood and availability

As expected, the software is written in the C programming language and it's available for download as a universal sources archive, which allows the user to optimize the application for his/her computer/operating system. A pre-built binary package is also available for download, but it is only supported on 64-bit hardware platforms.

What is new in this release:

  • This major release brings long lines support, development migration to QtCreator IDE, rewrite of all packaging scripts, new distros (my new Debian PPA, Fedora .rpm, snap, tarball, ...), running Travis CI, Unity test framework + unit tests, documentation update and various fixes.

What is new in version 1.17:

  • This release brings improvements and stabilization of the history management along with terminal background agnostic color profiles.

What is new in version 1.13:

  • New release brings support for transparent terminals. I also finally solved internationalization problems - use of Czech, German, Chinese, ... special characters w/ and w/o diacritics should be smooth.

What is new in version 1.1:

  • Stabilization release.

What is new in version 0.97:

  • Better compatibility with Ctrl-r, prompt to history filter pattern propagation, improved keyboard loop and more robust support of terminals that don't support colors.

What is new in version 0.71:

  • Added case insensitive search and switching using Ctrl-i.
