While this effect can be achieved via CSS in some cases, Wholly was created for those cases where table layouts are quite complicated and the action of hovering and clicking on a cell needs to be tied in with a JS-based action (like selecting).
Wholly comes with colspan and rowspan support for complicated table layouts that have lots of merged cells, the plugin automatically handling this feature for the developer, feature that can't be replicated via CSS in any way or form.
The Wholly highlighting results are all very CSS customization friendly, meaning they can be easily adapted to any table style and design.
Demos and docs are included with the Wholly download package.
