Lessfs is a high throughput data deduplicating file system for Linux, implemented throught the FUSE drivers. Lessfs complies to the POSIX standard and is very useful for backup purposes as well as providing storage for virtual machine images. Lessfs is capable of handling data rates up to 350MB/sec. It supports filesystem encryption.

What is new in this release:

  • This release fixes a problem where lessfs would leave orphaned data chunks in the system under high load.
  • A number of issues with lessfschk has also been solved.

What is new in version 1.1.2:

  • The 1.1.0 series of Lessfs adds support for many different hashes including SHA-256, tiger, and whirlpool (64 bytes).
  • Compression has been improved and many compression algorithms are now available, including bzip, gzip, lzo, and deflate.
  • The file_io backend supports encryption.
  • Performance has increased to a level where lessfs outperforms many of its rivals when it comes to write throughput.

What is new in version 1.0.5:

  • This release fixes some minor bugs that are related to logging only.

What is new in version 1.0.4:

  • Lessfs now supports transactions which eliminate the need for fsck after a crash. Also new is the automatic execution of a custom script when the file system has less then a certain amount of free space left.

What is new in version 0.9.2:

  • This release fixes some problems where permissions where not properly set on open files. It also fixes a problem with an incorrect link count of directories. Performance for some meta data operations has also improved.

What is new in version 0.9.0:

  • This version of lessfs passes all the fsx-linux tests. It has been confirmed that this release fixes the problems that people where reporting with rsync.

What is new in version 0.8.0:

  • This release fixes a possible segfault when lessfs is used with lzo compression.
  • It fixes a problem when compiling lessfs without encryption on a system without openssl-devel.
  • It enhances the logging facility.
  • Performance has improved on higher latency storage like drbd or iscsi.
  • This release reduces the number of fsync operations when sync_relax>0, which is needed for syncing many small files with, for example, rsync.

What is new in version 0.7.4:

  • This version introduces a new hash named Blue Midnight Whish. This is a very fast hash that increases lessfs performance significantly.
  • The implementation makes it easy to use any of the hashes from the NIST hash competition. BMW was chosen for lessfs because of the speed.
  • The length of the hash used is now configurable between 20 and 32 bytes for BMW and 20 to 24 for the tiger hash.

What is new in version 0.7.2:

  • This release fixes a typo in lib_tc.c that could potentially lead to data corruption.
  • Please upgrade ASAP if you use lessfs-0.7.1 with the tokyocabinet data store.
  • Older releases are not effected.
  • This release also contains a minor performance enhancement.
