NewBreeze is an open source, freely distributed, multiplatform, sleek, fast and stylish graphical file manager built on top of the dynamic Qt toolkit. It is designed as a drop-in replacement for the default file manager of various desktop environments that use the Qt framework, such as KDE Plasma, Razor-qt or LXQt.
Features at a glance
Key features include fast browsing of files and folders, fast startup, folder, HTML, text, image, PDF and ODT quick previews, file association support, ability to drag and drop files, support for USB flash drives or external hard disk drives, bookmark support, full mime-icon support, as well as modern BreadCrumbs navigation toolbar. The software also features an inline terminal, support for custom actions, support for automatic updates of the devices list, Categorized List, Details and Icon view modes, Catalog and Applications view modes, listing of bookmarks and drives in the sidebar, thumbnail preview, support for custom folder icons, and a file sharing functionality.
Getting started with NewBreeze
To install this software on your GNU/Linux system, you will have to download the latest version from Softoware using the big Download button above, save the archive somewhere on your path, extract it, enter the NewBreeze folder and edit the $$PREFIX qmake variable to your choice.Open a terminal emulator, navigate to the location of the extracted files and attempt to configure and compile the project by typing the “qmake && make && make install” command as root (system administrator) or with sudo, without quotes, of course.
Under the hood and supported OSes
The software is written in the C++ programming language and uses the cross-platform Qt GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. Besides the Qt libraries, it also requires the libmagic, liblzma, libtar, libzip, libbzip2 and zip packages. It runs on GNU/Linux and UNIX-like systems, as well as on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Both 64-bit and 32-bit instruction set architectures are supported at this time.
