MadCommander is an open source, totally free and multiplatform graphical software implemented in the Java programming langauge and designed from the offset to act as a twin-panel file manager for the Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

The application works like any other standard file manager or commander, similar to Norton Commander or Total Commander applications, and allows users to easily copy, paste, move, rename, delete, edit, view, compare, search, and compress files.

Features at a glance

Key features include basic file management functionality, support for bookmarking locations, support for multiple languages, support for all mainstream operating system and hardware platforms (see below for details).

Its graphical user interface (GUI) is also written in Java, which means that it looks the same on all supported OSes. By default, it will display all the files, including the hidden ones, from your Home directory.

Top and bottom toolbars will ensure that you quickly navigate back and forward in your file system, refresh the contents of the current folder, switch between brief and full view modes, search and filter files, view and edit files, copy, move and delete files or folders, as well as to create directories.

Under the hood, availability and supported OSes

Being written in the Java programming language, MadCommander can be used on any operating system where the Java runtime environment (JRE) is installed. This means that is fully operable in Mac OS X, Solaris, BSD and Microsoft Windows OSes. It has been successfully tested with both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.

For your convenience, and to make things easier, the application is distributed mainly as a pre-built binary package in the JAR file format. To use it, download the latest version of MadCommander from Softoware, save the file on your computer and double-click it. The source code of the application is available via Subversion.

What is new in this release:

  • The configuration file is working again.
  • A first unit test for the project has been added.
  • A bugfix has been made to the "manage bookmarks" dialog.

Requirements:

  • Java 2 Standard Edition Runtime Environment
