4Pane is a completely free and open source graphical application implemented in C++ and designed from the offset to provide users with a four pane file manager exclusively created for Linux kernel-based operating systems.

The application is a fully-featured, very fast, (no bling bling) and highly configurable file manager, built using the wxWidgets toolkit. It presents a modern interface split into a directory tree-view pane and detailed-list pane for both directories and files.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for multiple undo/redo operations, multiple duplication and renaming of files, archive management, user-defined tools, as well as a built-in terminal emulator. All the basic file manipulation functions are included, such as copy, paste, move, delete, rename and create folder.

In addition, support for bookmarks is also implemented, as well as the ability to mount external drives, partitions, NFS shares or ISO images, extract or decompress archives, and many more other cool features for you to discover.

Getting started with 4Pane

When opening the application for the first time, you will be greeted by a welcome screen/configuration wizard that helps you to optimize the software for your distribution. Existing configuration files can be imported from the get-go. But don’t be scared, because the configuration process is fully automatically and it will ask you if you want to place a shortcut on the desktop or not. Click the ‘Finish’ button and the application will open, allowing you to manage your files from a different perspective.

Under the hood and supported distributions

Looking under the hood of 4Pane, we can notice that the application is written entirely in the C++ programming language and its graphical user interface has been designed with the wxWidgets GUI toolkit.

Various distributions of Linux are officially supported by the software, including Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE, Fedora, Mageia, OpenMandriva, Slackware, and others where the GTK+/wxWidgets GUI toolkits are available.

For your convenience, the project is distributed as native installers for the aforementioned GNU/Linux operating systems, supporting both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.
