wxMaxima is an open source, multiplatform and free graphical application designed from the ground up as a front-end to the well-known Maxima command-line CAS (Computer Algebra System) for plotting data and functions in 3D and 2D.

The application is written with wxWidgets, providing users with dialogs and menus for Maxima's commands, and engineered to support GNU/Linux, BSD, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Getting started with wxMaxima

The easiest way to install wxMaxima on your GNU/Linux distribution is to install the pre-built binary packages from the main software repositories. If your distro doesn’t include the wxMaxima package, you must download the source tarball (tar.gz) file from Softoware.

Save the archive on a location of your choice, extract its contents, open a terminal emulator and use the ‘cd’ command to navigate to the location of the extracted archive files. Execute the ‘./configure && make’ command to optimize and compile the software for your computer, followed by the ‘make install’ command, as root or with sudo, to install it system wide.

To use wxMaxima, open it from the main menu of your desktop environment/window manager. Please note that you must have the latest Maxima version installed prior to installing this graphical front-end.

Under the hood

A quick look under the hood of the wxMaxima application will show us that the C# and C++ programming languages were used to written the code and the wxWidgets cross-platform GUI library for designing the graphical user interface. It can be installed on both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.
