Fiddler for Mono is a modified version of the free Fiddler web debugging proxy application for the open source Mono .NET development framework, supporting the Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems. It is a free, multiplatform and open source software project.

The application has been designed from the ground up to act as a web debugging proxy that allows users to inspect, debug and record traffic from any web browser, on any platform or operating system.

Getting started with Fiddler for Mono

As expected, you should first install Mono on your GNU/Linux system prior to attempting to use this software, which can be downloaded free of charge from Softoware. Save the archive somewhere on your computer and extract its contents using your favorite archive manager.

Open a terminal emulator, navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command (e.g. cd /home/softoware/app) and type the ‘mono Fiddler.exe’ command to run it. Hit the Enter key after you’ve typed the aforementioned command and the application will open, allowing you to debug web proxies.

Detailed instructions about how to configure Proxy and HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) for Fiddler, as well as information about limitations and bugs can be found on the project’s official website (see link at the end of the article).

Supported operating systems, web browsers and programming languages

Fiddler has been engineered in such a way to be a true cross-platform application, supporting all mainstream computer operating systems, such as Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, as well as all mobile OSes, including Android and iOS.

It is also a cross-browser software, supported on the Mozilla Firefox, Konqueror, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera web browsers. In addition, it comes with support for many programming languages, including Python, Ruby, PHP and Java.

Requirements:

  • Mono Project

Limitations:

  • Unstable remote certificate processing via HTTPS
  • No support for automatic proxy chaining
  • No support for Proxy and WPAD configuration scripts for upstream gateways
