SunVox is a commercial, yet freely distributed, fast, small, multiplatform, powerful and modular audio synthesizer that features a pattern-based sequencer (also known as tracker) and lets users to easily compose electronic music. It is specially designed for people who are always on the move and don’t want to depend on a specific platform or device.

Features at a glance

Key features include a modular interface, highly optimized synth algorithms, a flexible architecture, built-in effects and synthesizers, the ability to export multitrack WAV files, support for importing and exporting MIDI files, as well as MIDI input and output support.

In addition, it features real-time sample recording, support for recording any type of sound events in real-time, support for importing MOD (OctaMED, ProTracker) and XM (FastTracker) files and support for various sound systems, including ALSA, JACK, OSS, ASIO, MME, DirectSound and Audiobus.

Comes pre-loaded with a wide range of sound effects

Among the built-in sound effects and synthesizers, we can mention distortion, flanger, analog generator, reverb, WaveShaper, loop for creating glitch effects, echo, side chain compressor, high-pass, low-pass, band-pass and notch filters, a vocal filter for simulating human voices, an OGG Vorbis player, a 3-band equalizer and a sampler for the AIFF, WAV and XI audio files.

Additionally, it comes pre-loaded with a MetaModule that can be used to create your own sound effects and synthesizers. SpectraVoice, a FFT-based synthesizer that generates warm atmospheric sounds, is also included, as well as DrumSynth, which offers over 120 unique synthetic drum sounds and a FM synthesizer.

Supported OSes and availability

Currently, SunVox is a true cross-platform application that supports almost any popular device or operating system, including GNU/Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, Meego, Maemo, Microsoft Windows, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Mac OS X and iOS. It is available for download as a single, universal pre-built binary package.

What is new in this release:

  • iOS: 64bit CPU support;
  • iOS: SunVox file type association: now any SunVox-compatible documents (sunvox, midi, xm, mod) can be opened from other apps (Mail, Browser, etc.);
  • new module - Pitch Shifter;
  • shortcut configuration (key redefinition) window has been added to the Main Menu -> Preferences -> Interface;
  • customizable curve of the values has been added to MultiCtl module;
  • MIDI Octave Offset option has been added to the MIDI Preferences;
  • avconv (libav) support on systems without ffmpeg;
  • PR (Set note period) command has been renamed to SP (Set pitch);
  • main menu has been divided into two separate menus: the Main Menu (left side) and the Pattern Menu (right side);
  • UI design slightly changed;
  • Play (F9) shortcut has been changed to Play/Stop;
  • new keyboard shortcut: F10 - play from beginning;
  • new simple song examples: crossfader;
  • new song examples: Twistboy - Translucent, unspoken_words;
  • bugs fixed.

What is new in version 1.7.4 Beta 3:

  • extended Visualization Parameters in the Module Properties: type of the Level Meter, type of the Oscilloscope, background, shadow, etc.;
  • available Level Meter modes: OFF, Mono, Stereo, Color, Glow effect;
  • available Oscilloscope modes: OFF, Points, Lines, Bars, Bars2 (symmetrical), Stereo phase scope (Goniometer), Stereo phase scope x2;
  • default Visualization Parameters can be set in the SunVox Preferences (Main menu -> Preferences -> Modules -> Default visualizer);
  • WaveShaper: new controller "DC filter" (DC Blocking Filter) has been added; enabled by default;
  • new song examples: visualizer_demo, silence_artifacts;
  • bugs fixed.

What is new in version 1.7.3c:

  • Additional LFO module waveforms: sin2 (correct sine), saw, saw2;
  • Added ability to record into the selected Sampler slot;
  • Fixed bug with JACK MIDI input;
  • Fixed bug with the Sampler base note calculation;
  • Base note for the Vorbis Player is C5;
  • New song (examples): april_song.
