JACK (Jack Audio Connection Kit) is an open source, cross-platform and free command-line software, a daemon that provides a high efficiency and low-latency audio server, interprocess audio connectivity, and audio device sharing functionality on POSIX conformant operating systems.

Features at a glance

Jack Audio Connection Kit is capable of handling low-latency and real-time audio and MIDI, can connect several apps to an audio device, allows apps to share audio. In addition, JACK can distribute audio processing across a network.

JACK has been engineered from the ground up to be used on professional audio studios, for producing high-quality music. A GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-end for JACK is also available in the same package.

Who uses JACK?

JACK is used by a wide variety of applications and libraries, among which we can mention the Asterisk and I Hear U VoIP software, the KSubtile, LiVES, Open Movie Editor, VideoJack and xjadeo video application, the ac3jack, Darkice, Llcon and edcast-reborn streamers, the Free Music Instrument Tuner, tuneit and qjacktuner tuners, as well as the jack_capture, JACK Timemachine, meterec, QARecord and QJackRcd sound recorders.

In addition, the ARAS, Internet DJ Console, JMPX, J-QAM and Rivendell radio apps, the Denemo and MuseScore music notation editors, the Ardour, Jackbeat, LinuxBand, LMMS, MusE, OpenOctaveMidi, Qtractor, Renoise, Rosegarden, The Non DAW, The Non Sequencer, Traverso and Wired multi-track sequencers and HDR systems, and the AlsaPlayer, Audacious, MadJack, MOC, Qmmp, xmms-jack, VeeJay and MPlayer media players are also supported.

Supported operating systems

JACK is a cross-platform software, supported on GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. It has been written in the C programming language and it’s fully compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit hardware platforms. The software can be easily installed by using the pre-built binaries, the source tarball or via the main software repositories of your distribution.

What is new in this release:

  • A minor fix to the build system was required to make sure that JACK 0.124 would build with default settings on systems where the required libraries for the "zalsa" internal clients were present, but JACK was not already installed.
