Enc2ly is an open source, easy-to-use, multiplatform and small command-line software implemented in C and designed from the ground up to allow users to extract musical information from an Encore binary file (.enc) and output it to a Lilypond text file (.ly).

In other words, Enc2ly will practically transform the scores written in the GVOX’s Encore application into a text file that’s compatible with the Lilypond application. An actual demo is provided on the project’s homepage (see link at the end of the review).

Command-line options

Being a command-line program, Enc2ly includes various options, such as the ability to enable a specific language (Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, English, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, German, Flemish and Catalan are supported at this time), the ability to apply absolute regime for tones, instead of relative, as well as support for dumping the database in a text file (.txt), instead of a '.ly' file.

Getting started with Enc2ly

The software is written to support all GNU/Linux distribution, as well as the FreeBSD operating system. You might be able to install it from the main software repositories of your Linux distro, but the latest version can always be found on Softoware.

To install it on your Linux box, download the archive from Softoware, save it somewhere on your computer, extract its contents with your favorite archive manager, open a terminal emulator and navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command.

Then, type the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure (optimize) and compile the program for a specific hardware architecture (32-bit and 64-bit are supported at this time). The compilation process shouldn’t take more than a few seconds. After that, install Enc2ly system wide by running the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user.

What is Lilypond?

Lilypond is an open source and popular music engraving software, and Encore is a powerful music notation application. Enc2ly is compatible only with POSIX (GNU/Linux) operating systems.

What is new in this release:

  • This version adds internal code cleanup, now using dynamic memory management instead of static.
  • A Spanish translation was added, and the text dump mode no longer presents raw bytes, only meaningful information.
