AudioScope is a freely distributed command-line software, a very simple and basic Bash script that can be used as an audio oscilloscope utility on various UNIX-like operating systems, including GNU/Linux and Mac OS X.

It can capture sounds

The program has been engineered in such a way that it can capture sounds using /dev/dsp, SoX and DEMO devices. Furthermore, it can be used to easily and quickly calibrate vertical axis, thanks to the included circuit diagrams.

Getting started with AudioScope

This text-mode script is primarily targeted at kids who want to learn to capture sounds. To use it, you will have to download the sh file from Softoware or from the project’s official website, save it on a location of your choice, open a terminal emulator, navigate to the location where you save the file and run the “sh AudioScope.sh” command, without quotes.

The server will be stopped when you open it, but you can start it by pressing in the command window. On the status window, you can see the activity of the software when various commands are executed.

Supported operating systems

At the moment, AudioScope has been tested on a wide range of Linux distributions, including Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, PCLinuxOS and Fedora, as well as on the Mac OS X operating system. Both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures are supported at this time.

What is new in this release:

  • Does DC through Arduino and an experimental Chopper/VCO board through the mic input.

What is new in version 0.21.80:

  • This version removes the "clear" command. The function "clrscn()" replaces it.
  • It removes the "sleep" command. The function "delay()" replaces it, with keyboard override.
  • These functions use builtins and terminal extensions only.
  • This release adds a LOAD command to load a capture into the _buffer_ and display it.
  • On program startup, a pseudo-capture file is generated as "0000000000.BIN" in the /tmp/ directory to test the LOAD command. If you enter a wrong filename, it does nothing except return you to the Scope's COMMAND window.
