Audacity is an open source, cross-platform audio editor and recorder. Audacity can record and play sounds and import and export WAV, AIFF, MP3, and OGG files. Edit your sounds using cut, copy, and paste features (with unlimited undo functionality), mix tracks, or apply effects to your recordings. Audacity also has a built-in amplitude-envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode, and a frequency-analysis window for audio-analysis applications.

What is new in this release:

  • Equalization effect now split into two effects, Filter Curve and Graphic EQ.
  • Presets (using manage button) now active/working.
  • Can now have two points at same frequency for steep steps.
  • 'What you hear is what you get' for exports.
  • Leading silence (blank space) not skipped over in exports.
  • Quality setting on AAC/M4A exports.
  • Removed Nyquist Workbench (use built-in nyquist features).
  • Removed Vocal Remover (use Vocal Reduction).
  • Removed On-Demand aliased files (copy files instead).
  • Removed 'Normalize on Load' (Normalize as needed on export, instead).
  • Over 150 bugs fixed since v.2.3.2

What is new in version 2.3.0:

  • Easier zooming in and out with mousewheel, new Zoom Toggle command, and context menu for vertical rulers (thanks to James Crook)
  • Easy access to change keyboard bindings of menu commands by holding Shift key
  • Detection of dropout errors while recording with overburdened CPU
  • Improved contrasts in Light and Dark themes
  • Half-wave display option
  • Several bugs/annoyances in 2.2.1 are now fixed

What is new in version 2.2.2:

  • Easier zooming in and out with mousewheel, new Zoom Toggle command, and context menu for vertical rulers (thanks to James Crook)
  • Easy access to change keyboard bindings of menu commands by holding Shift key
  • Detection of dropout errors while recording with overburdened CPU
  • Improved contrasts in Light and Dark themes
  • Half-wave display option
  • Several bugs/annoyances in 2.2.1 are now fixed

What is new in version 2.2.1:

  • Waveform colorways let you optionally change the color of the waveforms displayed in your project (thanks to James Crook)
  • Updated message translations for nineteen languages
Several bugs/annoyances in 2.2.0 are now fixed
  • See updated Manual and Release Notes for details.

What is new in version 2.2.0:

  • Four supplied user interface themes, and customizability of themes for advanced users (thanks to James Crook and the Dark Audacity project)
  • Playback of MIDI files (fully automatic on Windows; requires cooperating software synthesizer programs on macOs or Linux; special thanks to Audacity co-founder Roger Dannenberg and new contributor “pokechu22”)
  • Better organized menus
  • Help link buttons in many dialogs lead to the relevant manual pages
  • 198 bugs/annoyances in 2.1.3 fixed, most importantly:
  • Improved recovery from full file system errors; in case of recording, Audacity 2.2.0 will preserve as much of the recorded data as possible
  • Thorough update of the manual with new images, more hover texts, and more cross-references.
  • Complete support for macOS 10.12 (Sierra) and 10.13 (High Sierra)

What is new in version 2.1.3:

  • Audacity 2.1.3 now properly supports Windows 10 (thanks to an upgrade of the PortAudio library) and on MacOS has some previously missing support for Magic Mouse/Trackpad (thanks to Paul Licameli).
  • New Distortion effect, Rhythm Track (was called Click Track) and Sample Data Import (thanks to Steve Daulton). Also effects are no longer grayed-out when in pause.
  • New scrub ruler and ‘pinned’ option so the waveform moves and the recording/playing head stays still. (Paul)
  • New features in Timer Record (Mark Young & Steve)
  • On Mac, audacity.app is now added to /Applications/ directly rather than adding a folder there.
  • 64 bugs/annoyances in 2.1.2 fixed of which 15 were long-standing issues. Also lots done (Paul again) to systematically deal with memory leaks.
  • Audacity 2.1.3 is the last version that will officially support Windows XP.

What is new in version 2.1.2:

  • New option ‘Spectral Reassignment’. This algorithm deduces a ‘finer’ spectrogram for vocal work.
  • Improvements to Pitch (EAC) – cleaner (sharper) display.
  • Spectrogram Settings are now available per-track.

What is new in version 2.1.1:

  • The most visible new feature is scrubbing and seeking , including backwards play. Updates to Quick-Play also help with finding a precise position in the audio.
  • You can now install plug-ins without restarting Audacity or add and remove any effect or generator from the menus.
  • Over 50 bugs have been addressed with this release. Edits are now processed much faster in longer projects of a few hours duration.
  • Effects now have presets. A new Limiter replaces the Hard Limiter effect. There's a new version of Vocal Removal, a cross-fade effect for combining clips on the same track and 'classic filters' available as an opt-in effect.

What is new in version 2.1.0:

  • Redesigned Meter Toolbars: The default shows separate Record and Playback Meters, half-height so they can be wider while docked, in gradient style.
  • A frequency selection can now be made (and spectral edit effects applied to those frequencies) when in a spectrogram view. You can also create or adjust frequency selections in a new "Spectral Selection Toolbar" (available at View > Toolbars).
  • Transcription Toolbar (Play-at-speed) can now loop play and cut-preview.
  • Timer Record now saves recordings automatically into an existing project.
  • New Armenian translation.

What is new in version 2.0.6:

Improvements:

  • Better user interface for Keyboard Preferences.
  • Streamlining of several Menus.
  • LV2 now supported on all platforms, and improved VST settings interface.
  • Translations updated, including adding Tamil language.
  • Other improvements, including to import/export and ease of installation on Mac OS X.

Bug Fixes:

  • User interface bug fixes to Region Restore, dragging selections, and many others.
  • Effects bug fixes to add missing effects to Chains, fix accuracy of Analyze > Contrast, fix accuracy of Noise Removal attack and decay, and improve speed of Nyquist effects on OS X and Linux.
  • Other bug fixes to Timeline after Loop Play, Transcription Toolbar, and Linux build issues.
