C-Dogs SDL is an open source, multiplatform and completely free action/arcade game, a port of the old DOS version of the C-Dogs game created by Ronny Wester a few years ago. The project has been modernized by utilizing the SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) libraries and it’s implemented in C.

Originally ported to SDL by Jeremy Chin and Lucas Martin-King, using Gentoo Linux as their development environment, C-Dogs SDL is an arcade shoot-em-up game that lets players work alone or cooperatively during missions.

Getting started with C-Dogs SDL

If you’re using a modern distribution of Linux like Ubuntu or Arch Linux, you will most probably find the game in the main software repositories of the operating system, so we strongly suggest you to install it from there using the built-in package manager (e.g. Ubuntu Software Center or Pacman). For those of you who use distributions of Linux where the C-Dogs SDL game is not available, the devs are offering for download a universal binary package that requires no installation.

Therefore, you might want to download the latest version of the game from Softoware or from the project’s official website (see link at the end of the article), save the package on your Home folder or on the desktop, unpack it, open the extracted folder, enter the ‘bin’ folder and run the game by double-clicking on the ‘cdogs-sdl’ binary. If the game doesn’t start, it’s because some libraries are missing and need to be install (check the program’s homepage for details).

Supported on Linux, Android, Mac and Windows

C-Dogs SDL is a cross-platform game that has been engineered to run on all GNU/Linux distributions, on the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows computer operating systems, as well as on the Android mobile OS. Additionally, it run on the BeOS-inspired Haiku operating system.
