Ubuntu Mini Remix (previously known as Miniubuntu) is a very basic open source Ubuntu-based operating system that provides users with a command-line interface from where they can install a desktop environment, utilities and applications, in order to build their own Ubuntu-based Linux distribution.

Build the Ubuntu system of your dreams

In other words, this Linux distribution is quite similar to the Arch Linux ISO images, allowing the user to customize the operating system to his or her needs. The following tools are recommended if you want to build your own Ubuntu-based Linux distribution: Ubuntu Builder, Ubuntu Customization Kit and Customizer.

Availability and supported platforms

This product can be downloaded from Softoware, via the project's homepage, as two Live CD ISO images of approximately 250MB in size each, designed to support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) instruction set architectures.

As usual, the user must burn the ISO images onto blank CD discs or write them on USB flash drives of 512MB or higher capacity in order to boot them from the BIOS of a computer.

Boot options

The Live CD looks like any other official Ubuntu Live CD, designed to automatically start the live environment in ten seconds from the initial boot, but its functionality is a bit different. The boot menu will be revealed if the user presses a keyboard key during this timeout, allowing him or her to choose a language from the get-to.

Default boot options include the ability to try Ubuntu without installing or install the operating system on a local drive, which will redirect the user to a shell prompt. In addition, you can check the disc for defects (only if using a CD media), test the computer's RAM for errors, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk.

Bottom line

Summing up, we strongly recommend to use Ubuntu Mini Remix if you are one of those computer users who prefer to build their own Linux distribution from scratch, partitioning the drive, installing a base system, chrooting into the Linux environment, adding the packages you need, a desktop environment, installing a boot loader, etc.
