Poedit is an open source, free and multiplatform graphical software that has been designed from the ground up to allow users to easily and quickly edit .po files, also known as gettext catalogs. In other words, this application aims to be a graphical editor for translations generated with the well known gettext program.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for plural forms, support for Unicode encoding, displays data in a very compact way, highlighting of whitespaces, automatic compilation of .mo files, automatic update of headers, references browser, integration with the GNOME and KDE desktop environments, UTF-8 support, comments editing, catalogs manager, and spell checking.

Installing Poedit

On GNU/Linux, you have two choices when it comes to installing the Poedit application. If you are a hardcore user and you want to optimize it for your distribution and hardware architecture, we strongly recommend you to use the source tarball, which can be downloaded from Softoware, free of charge.

Please note that installing from sources, requires you to have various libraries installed on your system, as well as a compiler. On the other hand, beginners should attempt installing the Poedit application from the default software repositories of their GNU/Linux distributions, using the pre-built binary packages.

Under the hood and supported operating systems

The software is written in the C++ programming language and it uses the cross-plaform wxWidgets GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. It supports all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Availability and supported platforms

Currently, the application is available for download only as a universal sources archive on GNU/Linux systems and it has been successfully tested with both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures. Pre-built binary packages for might be available on third-party software repositories of various distributions of Linux
