Pekwm, also known as the Pek Window Manager, is an open source, unobtrusive and completely free window manager based on the aewm++ project, which is also a window manager software. Pekwm is designed to be used on Linux kernel-based operating systems.

Features at a glance

Key features include window grouping (similar to the Fluxbox, Ion, and pwm window managers), xinerama support, automatic properties, as well as a keygrabber that supports keychains, providing usability to all uses.

Runs on top of X Window System

The window manager is very configurable, lightweight, fast, small, flexible, and functional. It can run on any GNU/Linux distribution that uses the X.Org (X11) display server (X Window System), as a replacement or alternative to the default desktop environment/window manager.

Used on various distributions of GNU/Linux

The Pek Window Manager is the default graphical session of several distributions of GNU/Linux, including Manjaro (see the ManjaroPek operating system for details). It has been engineered to support both 64-bit and 32-bit CPU architectures.

Getting started with Pekwm

As mentioned, various GNU/Linux operating systems include the Pekwm window manager in their main software repositories, so it is quite easy to install it through the integrated graphical package manager.

Installing the Pek Window Manager from the source package is also easy, as you will have to unpack the archive, open a terminal emulator and go to the location where you’ve extracted the archive file (e.g. cd /home/softoware/pekwm-0.1.17), run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the software, followed by the ‘sudo make install’ command to install it.

After installation, you will find a Pekwm entry in your login manager. To use Pek Window Manager, end your current session by logging out, choose Pekwm from the sessions dropdown menu of your login screen, and log back it.
