OpenDocMan is an open source, free and powerful web-based Document Management System (DMS) software written in PHP and specifically designed for GNU/Linux operating systems.

It is a very lightweight application that can be easily installed on any Apache- or IIS-powered web server, backed by the powerful MySQL database engine, in order to offer a useful and powerful project for companies looking to keep their documentation in a centralized repository.

Features at a glance

Key features include an automated installation script, check-in and check-out functionality, departmental access control, file moderation, fine grained user access control, support for all web servers that support PHP, as well as a built-in search function.

In addition, users will be able to upload files using a supported web browser (the application has been tested with Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, Chromium, Safari and Internet Explorer browsers), track revisions of documents, or set up a renewal process for newly added documents.

Another interesting feature is the ability to send updated or new files to review. Files can be accessed by a group of people or individual users. Support for multiple languages is included (English, Spanish, German, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Croatian and Turkish).

The document management functionality of OpenDocMan supports any file type, requires no FTP access, support metadata for each file, supports file expiration, supports revision history, supports custom properties for each document, support for physically storing documents on the server, supports preventing of overwriting of edits, and supports organizing of files in categories or departments.

Under the hood and supported OSes

Taking a look under the hood of OpenDocMan, we can notice that the application has been written in the PHP server-side programming language and it supports GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Both 32-bit and 64-bit computers are supported at this time.
