Community Linux

Community Linux is a free and open source distribution of Linux that aims to be as user-friendly, low on resources, easy-to-use, portable and simple as possible, built around the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment and packed with a wide range of powerful and useful applications.

Designed for USB thumb drives

The distribution is available for download as a tarball (tar.gz archive) that contains all the root file system, so you can easily deploy it on a USB thumb drive of 4GB or higher capacity. Of course, this means that you cannot deploy the extracted archive files on a DVD disc and try to boot the operating system from the BIOS of your computer.

To deploy the root files system on a USB stick, download the latest version of Community Linux from Softoware, save it on a location of your choice, unpack the files as root to preserve file permissions, insert the USB flash drive on your computer and format it.

Then, you should make the USB bootable and deploy Community Linux on it by using the “su root -c 'make detect'” command, followed by the “su root -c 'make doall'” command, both without quotes.

Built around GNOME Classic, includes powerful apps

The distribution aims to be traditional and familiar, using the GNOME Classic graphical interface, which features a two-panel layout and includes a vast amount of open-source applications, among which we can mention the OpenOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, GIMP image editor, as well as Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client.

In addition, the Cheese webcam viewer, Evolution email and calendar client, Tomboy note-talking editor, Clipper clipboard manager, Nautilus file manager, and many other useful applications are also included in the Community Linux operating system, which is entirely supported on both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) computers.
