ClipToWebCM is a service application and contextual menu plug-in which tries to open the currently selected text (or clipboard contents if there is no selection) as a URL in your default web browser. Of course this isn't anything a copy and paste operation can't achieve, but it's quicker. It's also more versatile than the "Open URL" contextual menu item since it doesn't require a full URL. (Note: As of version 1.0.2 the selection can also be a Finder file or folder; the text will be the name of the object.)

As of version 1.0.2 you can use the provided system preference pane to create a list of extensions that the contextual menu will use to build alternate forms of the URL, one URL for each of the extensions, if the selection does not already have an extension. (this feature is not available to the service application, because service menu items are not dynamic.)

Note: "Old Style" Contextual Menu plug-ins are not supported in Mac OS X 10.6 and above. Please use the service application included: OpenAsURLService. This will provide the service as a contextual menu and application Services menu item.

For example: suppose you control click on a text selection whose content is "news" and your extensions are {com, gov, edu). Then the following URLs will appear in the contextual menu:

Extensions can be imported from a text file. A sample text file named "SampleImportFile" is included in the software distribution.

ClipToWebCM is part of the Limit Point Software Utility Bundle. One donation activates all the software. Upgrades free, new products are included! Visit http://www.limit-point.com/Utilities.html for more details and a list of available software.

What is new in this release:

  • Added a "service application" version, OpenAsURLService, to provide access to the ClipToWeb functionality in Mac OS X 10.6 and above as a contextual service using text selections. (The service item supports Mac OS X 10.4 and above, and the CM, ClipToWebCM, supports Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5.)
  • The text selection is trimmed at the beginning and end of whitespace for robustness. (For both the service and CM, ClipToWebCM)

Requirements:

Mac OS X 10.4 or above.
